Member Benefit: Monthly Dance Party

Do you like to Jam?  Are you ready to party?

Join award-winning family musician Charity Kahn for a highly interactive, joyful, playful and unique music class that will inspire your children (and you!) to sing, dance, stretch, breathe and imagine.  The JAMboodas Family Dance Party takes place one each month and is appropriate for all ages.

Singer/songwriter Charity Kahn and her jammin’ band create soul and rock ‘n roll vibes authentic enough for any adult fan, but not at the expense of the young target audience. Catchy melodies and wonderfully imaginative, meant-to-be-heard lyrics aim straight for a child’s spirit, eager mind and dancing feet. This is one memorable—-and happily repeatable—-album.
— Lynn Heffley, Parents' Choice Foundation, May 2006

These dance parties provide a fun and social way to check out the JAMboodas vibe. We are incredibly lucky to get to share Charity's music with the Recess Community each month.  Charity has written all of the songs she performs and has an incredible library of music to share with families. Her tunes range from upbeat, rocking out, dancing, singing at the top of your lungs songs to winding down, chilling out, tucking in, singing in sweet harmonies.  For reviews and more info and to listen, go here

Whatever you do, come enjoy a morning of song, dance and mindfulness with your wee one, gramma and grampa, friends and neighbors...anyone you love!

Free for Recess members, Non Members can reserve a spot $28

It has been great to see so many new faces in the space in January. Thank you to everyone who has been in! We’re excited to continue to meet families and grow our community and appreciate your help in spreading the word.

Fundamentally, Recess Collective is founded on the notion that, together, we are better. We’re better parents, better able to raise healthy kids,

Our space is designed to bring together folks who support families in one way or another, host other organizations, collaborate with local businesses, and bring together members of the community.

If you are interested in collaborating, utilizing the space, volunteering your talents or making a tax-deductible donation to support our mission, please get in touch.

Here’s to a fabulous February!

THE TODDLER TRANSITION 3/19, 7:30pm, 9-18 mo

Your baby is becoming a toddler-how exciting (and exhausting!). Don’t fear the toddler transition!

Join Early Childhood Matters to learn more about this period of dramatic child development. Learn more about your child’s rapidly developing brain, and find out what is behind the often unexpected challenges that may arise in toddlerhood (mealtime struggles, tantrums, hitting/biting, shyness and more). Practice positive discipline strategies that nurture connection, communication, and curiosity in your emerging toddler, while planting the seeds for emotional intelligence right from the start.

“This class saved me as I entered a stage I was not really prepared for! I still use the strategies and language we learned in class with my older child, and now with my second child who is 14 months.”

Support for Families Affected By the Shutdown

Recess Collective was designed to harness the power of community in the effort to support families with young children. This is crucial for survival of a typical day as a parent, but also when crisis hits.

As the partial government shutdown continues, we are called to extend additional support to our friends and members who are federal employees.

Making ends meet without a paycheck is extremely stressful; we want to help alleviate some of this stress for our community. So we invite all parents of young children affected by the shutdown to come in for free access to support and play in a safe & healthy space at Recess.

Until the shutdown ends, we are offering federal employees with a valid government ID waived membership dues. This service is offered to current members as well as individuals and families who join Recess in January, 2019. Additionally, we welcome all non-member employees to come as our guest to reboot with a free cup of coffee, and space to let your little one play.

Our fundamental goal is to build connection through this place we’ve created for families. Recess invites government employees to lean in to this support while they’re experiencing unplanned challenges. To use this program, please send us an email at hello@recesscollective.org

Wrapping up 2018 - Updates, End of Year Giving & Looking forward...

Thank you all for supporting Recess Collective, being a part of our community, and sharing our new space with us.

What a whirlwind of a year! In 2018:

  • We closed Recess in Potrero Hill, after 10 and a half years of operation

  • We established Recess Collective, a non-profit entity to continue offering play and parent support to local families

  • We built out and opened a new space to house Recess Collective, at 2226 Taraval. It has all the same elements as “the old” Recess, but is in a more sustainable space that incorporates the values of a collective. Working together - our staff, our volunteers and our partners - are able to leverage connections to serve the community in a broader way.

  • Our founder, Lisa’s family, welcomed a new baby boy!

Looking Forward! 2019’s goals:

  • Provide space to play for our new community and continue to build the awesome web of families we get to work with.

  • We will seek volunteers to assist with fundraising, grant writing and special events so that we can extend the offerings of Recess to any family who would like to utilize them.

  • Expand the Collective. It’s incredible to think about the amount of talent right here in San Francisco and the surrounding bay area. We are fortunate to have such a wealth of resources for folks from all walks of life. The primary intention of Recess Collective is to harness that talent to serve all people. So in the new year, we will continue to work toward that mission. This includes:

    • Organizing special events & programing for families of for children with disabilities, and their siblings

    • Training in conjunction with Our Family Coalition for LGBTQ families

    • Continue partnering with Nurse-Family Partnership and build our scholarship fund to include at risk mothers & families who could not otherwise access a safe space for play,

    • Functioning as a space to bring together generations. By working with SF Village, we will develop programming for intergenerational play with local seniors.

    • Working with other organizations to deliver creative solutions for families to make life with young children more collaborative. There are real life solutions to easing the load we each carry and Recess is designed to create the back drop for those to come to life. Look forward to childcare co-ops, toy swaps, craft nights and recipe swaps. It’s exciting stuff!

If you would like to support this mission and have the means to contribute toward it’s fulfillment, we’d love to invite you to get involved. There are options for end of year giving that include $5 / month contribution, or a one time donation of any amount.

Every dollar raised will ultimately go toward growing this incredible community hub, creating space for healthy child development, welcoming in families from all walks of life, and making the journey for parents and caregivers a joyful one.

$5 a month goes a long way to helping us build up our programming to reach more families.
$10 a month will allow us to provide a parent with weekly playgroup and play access.
$20 a month could be your way of giving a group of at risk mothers monthly playdates to connect with one another and have a safe space for play.
$50 +/mo gives us an opportunity to gift families full memberships and birthday parties.

Anyone who makes a donation of $25/mo or more will receive recognition on our founders wall with a 3x3 tile and an invitation to our Spring Festival! All donations are tax deductible.
