raising good people

As parents, we have different ways of setting limits, teaching sleep, feeding, and giving birth. We have access to varied tools, networks of support and knowledge about child development. We each come to the table with vastly different skill sets, and perspectives, but we are united by one thing: We ultimately want to raise good people.

Carrying out this ideal is tough no matter how you slice it. And it’s complicated further by so many factors, including a parent’s location, access to resources, trauma, & sense of community. Each of these can really impact our ability to raise kids who thrive.

Recess was created to:

  • provide community for parents, regardless of circumstance,

  • provide access to play to support child development,

  • and vetted resources to caregivers to help them do the best they can. Because that’s what we can each do… our best.

The organic web of support that emerges when we bring together phenomenal experts, free play for young children, and parents who can honestly share their struggles and successes is truly magic.

It is the special sauce that allows us to raise good people. It is the common thread that links us together.

We are working behind the scenes to build new ways of facilitating this intersection of support for families with young children. Our newest groups in the outer sunset for Expecting and New parents are designed to support folks with new babies. We hope you’ll join us or pass the info along to a friend or neighbor.

INTRO TO MINDFULNESS FOR PARENTS. You may know Charity Kahn the children's musician and educator.  She's also an incredible parent educator and community builder.  Recess is teaming up with Charity to bring a five week class, Mindfulness for Parents, to the space on Monday evenings 4/13-5/11.  We hope you'll join us in this opportunity for self care, stress reduction and insanely useful skills to ground yourself so that you are able to support your children.  More info here

It's just a space without you.  What would your family like to see at Recess?  Many of you have completed our survey to help shape the future of Recess.  If you have not yet, and would like to share your thoughts/desires for our organization, please hop over to the survey

Mobile offering: New Parent Groups

penny2.jpg

Being a new parent is an exciting, exhausting, and magical time. Only you truly know the emotional and physical toll a new baby brings, and what a unique and personal experience it is.

Our New Parent Groups are geared towards preparing and supporting new parents in this journey.  Whether you're pregnant or have a new baby, you'll likely have questions about a variety of topics.

Carve out a little special time each week, for you, to connect with other new parents, commiserate, and feel a little less isolated.

Some weeks, we have an expert in the field joining us to share relevant information -- on topics ranging from pelvic wellness to breastfeeding to baby sign language to child development…and other weeks we simply gather to chat, field questions and share resources.

We invite you to hang out and get to know other new parents, recharge in a laid back environment, and venture to a nearby park or cafe afterwards, if you'd like.

  • Bring a beverage, get settled, and enjoy the infant toys available

  • Meet other new parents

  • Stay for Q & A and connect

Join Us

We run the groups in 5 week chunks so that we can build community. These meet-ups are a suggested donation of $95 for the four-week series, and no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Simply pay what you can. At the moment, our offerings are limited. Please reach out if you have a group of new parents interested in connecting in a supportive environment and we can come to you.

  • BYO baby blankets, food/drink, anything to keep you hydrated & your babe happy.

  • Open to newborns, through crawling infants.

  • Don't worry if you need to take a break to feed, change a diaper, or step away to get some fresh air.

  • We all get it and are happy to have you in whatever form that takes (babies are unpredictable!).
